The 26th April 2020 should have been a day of celebration for Universal AV, as it was officially our 30th Birthday.

Unfortunately it also sees us dealing with a little something called COVID-19 and we cannot celebrate as originally planned. When working from home measures came into force and we all realized the seriousness of this virus, we decided that all plans would have to be put on hold until we can safely celebrate together, however that does not mean we should not be marking this pretty magnificent achievement.

In 1990 the year Universal AV was founded was quite a year. First and foremost Universal was established, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched, Margaret Thatcher resigned as the UK’s first female Prime Minister and Nelson Mandela was released from prison. It also saw the official launch of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee in the late autumn. Could you imagine not having that tool at your disposal now? This tool has seen a steep step change in how people work and learn and is what has enabled us to continue to work/learn in these uncertain times.

The technology in the audio visual industry has changed dramatically in the last 30 years and as an integrator we have developed with it. We have seen a move from analogue to digital. Lamp technology to laser a more environmentally friendly solution, conference calls replacing face to face meetings again helping your carbon printprint. Zoom, Teams, Skype and Hangouts are all terms we are now familiar with as a Nation. They are terms we have been using for a while here at Universal AV, and we have been leading the way and advising customers on the right technology for them, for 3 decades.

It has been this time for reflection that has confirmed that what we do here at Universal AV is right and stands the test of time, and has allowed many of our customers to continue working through the use of AV at this present moment.

So instead of shying away from being 30 we are embracing it. We have pioneered over the years. Examples have been:

  • Rolling out one of the largest lecture capture solutions in the UK which allows students to still learn in these uncertain times https://www.universal-av.ltd/case-studies/leeds-university-lecture-capture-system.html
  • Installed solutions to facilitate working from home
  • Created collaborative working and learning environments which have allowed skills to be developed and used and tested during this time
  • AV Award Integrator of the Year 2016 winner
  • 3 successful offices covering north east, north west, midlands and Yorkshire
  • Developed our own in-house AV specific apprenticeship scheme
  • Worked closely with all key stakeholders to deliver innovative and practical solutions using the latest technology available
  • Achieved ISO status, Investors in People, CHAS, etc
  • We have succesfully served the NEUPC framework continuously since its inception.
  • We have been the partner of choice and have delivered countless AV projects for leading corporate clients such as Siemens Turbo Machinery Ltd, Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc, Asda Stores Ltd, Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK Ltd, RIBA Enterprises, Silent Night Group, Qhotels, Walker Morris LLP
  • Provided AV installations to Olympics 2012
  • Developed our own in-house AV specific apprenticeship scheme
  • Always taken an active role in the local community through our support of local charities, providing experience and work opportunities in the areas we operate.
  • Worked closely with all key stakeholders to deliver innovative and practical solutions using the latest technology available - https://www.universal-av.ltd/case-studies/leeds-university-business-school.html

We now look to the next 30 years. It is already exciting for Universal AV with an office move on the horizon as soon as we are physically possible, as well as some interesting installations to get back to.

The past few weeks have forced changed for people, will we embrace what we have learnt from this pandemic? The way we work will no doubt change after the situation we find ourselves in. Will we ever go to the office as much as we used to, will we drive to host non-essential face to face meetings or will we continue to use the technology that we have endorsed for so long and collaborate remotely? Will more education facilities look to host classes on-line? The answer- Who knows? We think there is room for both and are excited to see what these new challenges bring to us to allow us to innovate and devise solutions for our customers.

One thing we can be sure of. When we do get to finally celebrate those 30 years, they will be in person and style with our fantastically loyal, knowledgeable team, customers and suppliers alike.

Happy 30th Birthday Universal AV Services and thank you to each and every customer that has made this journey with us, and to the amazing team of staff behind the brand.
